BMVC supporting Ty Hapus

Date: 27 August 2023 | By: Nick M

On Tuesday 22nd  August, an unusually bright, warm and sunny afternoon brought the choir  to the austere but beautiful surroundings of St John’s Methodist Church on Barry Island.

Used in the First World War as a hospital for wounded soldiers of the conflict, the church has  a lovely calming atmosphere as well as many fascinating and moving memorabilia making it  a particularly appropriate setting for the Ty Hapus “Musical Memories” Concert.

Julian Telfer gave us a very warm welcome and introduction after which we sang an eclectic  selection of songs with our musical director Dorothy Connell not only conducting but  also compering the event with grace and good humour.

Our musical journey started in Wales  with Cwm Rhondda and then took in California with Surfing USA, Ireland with Fields of  Athenry and Scotland with Sunshine on Leith, culminating in a passionate rendition of Yma o Hyd.

Audience participation was enthusiastic and tuneful and the afternoon finished with a  communal rendition of Frank Hennessey’s Billy the Seal, this being the tradition at the Ty Hapus concert.
