Douglas Baxter is a native of Ipswich where he received his early musical education. Later he studied modern languages at Nottingham University, graduating in French and German. In 1962 he joined the staff of Barry Girls’ Grammar School and two years later joined the choir. He was secretary from 1966 until appointed deputy conductor in 1974. He had also been conductor of Barry Choral Society since 1976.
